Learn Old-School Library Hand

“Library hand,” is a penmanship style developed in the mid-1880's for the purpose of keeping catalogs standardized and legible. Just as Dewey himself recommended in 1887, we will practice “[taking] great pains to have all writing uniform in size, blackness of lines, slant, spacing and forms of letters.”
Participants will leave with a physical catalog card for a favorite book that they create themselves using library hand.

Margarita Nafpaktitis
As the Slavic and East European collections librarian, the geographic scope of the collections I curate includes Poland, Russia, Ukraine and many other countries in East Central and Southeastern Europe. I select materials for research and instruction published in and about these regions in new and old formats, in subject areas including literature and linguistics, cultural studies, history, and social sciences. I also consult and collaborate with students and faculty to help them find the materials that they need for their research and their teaching.
