This hands-on workshop is a gentle introduction to two essential programming tools: the Unix Shell and Git. You'll discover why the Unix shell has remained one of computing's most powerful and enduring tools for decades, learning to execute complex tasks with simple, elegant commands, automate repetitive workflows, and combine basic operations into sophisticated scripts. The shell forms the foundation for advanced computational work including high-performance computing. The second part of the workshop focuses on Git and GitHub, the industry-standard tools for version control and collaboration used by professionals worldwide. You'll explore core Git concepts for managing your work effectively, learn how to track and document changes in your files, and discover how to use GitHub for backup and collaboration.
